For the old city, between 521 - 586 BC, the Persian occupiers under Darius I built a small fortress here.  The Greeks named the site Babylon.  Under Trajan a new fortress was built here between 98 and 117.  This fortress was one of the 3 to control all of Egypt.  When the Arabs conquered Egypt in 641 they built their capital next to the northern walls of Babylon.  The New city dates from 19th century.  The Citadel dates from 810, it was fortified by Salah ad-Din in 1176, it was used by Mameluke sultans as their headquarters, it was occupied by Ottoman Janissaries, and it became the main residence of Mohammed Ali.
