Aswan is situated at the first Nile Cataract.  It is a city of approximately 250,000 (2008).  It was the ancient city of Swanet and a border town of early Egypt.  Local stone quarries provided obelisks.  The climate is very dry!  The temperature may be very hot, 124 degrees in 1951.  Of particular interest are the High Dam, the Temple of Philae and Elephantine Island.  It is the southern termination point for Nile River cruise boats.
