Due to its importance for Judaism and Islam, the Temple Mount it is one of the most contested religious sites in the world.  The Temple Mount contains the holiest site in Judaism.  The two Jewish Temples were built at the site.  The first was Solomon's Temple built in 960 BC and destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon in 586 BC.  The second Temple construction was started under Cyrus in around 538 BC, and completed in 516 BC with additions to the mount and the Temple made by Herod the Great in 19 BC.  A Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus was built on the Temple Mount by Hadrian in 130 as part of Aelia Capitolina.  The Noble Sanctuary, as the Temple Mount is called by Islam, is the third holiest site in Islam, revered as the destination of Muhammad's journey to Jerusalem, and the location of his ascent to heaven.  The site is the location of the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock.  The site was the headquarters of the Knights Templar and the Palace of King Baldwin I during the Crusades.
