Basilica Cistern (cr)
|Start Slide Show|
The Basilica Cistern is a large underground Byzantine cistern. It was created under Justinian in 532. The roof is held up by some 336 columns approximately 26 feet high. The structure replaces earlier cisterns and is through to be the site of a nymphaeum.
The pictures are not very good but they will give you the idea. I did not use a flash. A cool place to escape the summer heat about 500 feet from the Hagia Sophia.
