TThe Piazza Venezia takes its name from the adjacent Palazzo Venezia, the former embassy in the city of the Republic of Venice.  The piazza is at the foot of the Capitoline Hill.  It is dominated by the Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II which contains the Italian Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  Palazzo Venezia was built during the second half of the 15th century.  Later it became the residence of the Cardinal of the Basilica of St Mark.
