Located in the Wadi Qelt not far from the Dead Sea, St. George's Monastery was founded in 480 by 5 hermits.  In 614 the monks were killed by invading Persians.  Partial occupation occurred by the Crusaders who restored it in 1179.  The current structure was restored in the late 19th century by the Greek Orthodox Church.  The valley parallels the old Roman road to Jericho, the backdrop for the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37).
