Ostia Antica is the harbor city of ancient Rome.  Ostia is now ~2 miles from the sea because of silting from the Tiber river and a drop in sea level.  An inscription says that Ostia was founded by Ancus Marcius, the fourth king of Rome, in the 7th century BC.  In 68 BC, the town was sacked by pirates and set on fire, the consular war fleet was destroyed and two prominent senators were kidnapped.  The town was re-built with protective walls.  The town was further developed during the 1st century under the influence of Tiberius, who ordered the building of the town's first Forum.  Archaeologists have discovered public latrines, a large theatre, many public baths, numerous taverns and inns, apartment complexes, and a firefighting service.  Slow decay began in the late Roman era around the time of Constantine I when the town ceased to be an active port and became a popular country retreat for aristocrats.  Decaying conditions were mentioned by St. Augustine in the late 4th century.  The poet Rutilius Namatianus also reported the lack of maintenance of the city in 414.  With the end of the Roman Empire, Ostia was finally abandoned in the 9th century after repeated invasions by Arab pirates.  Under Mussolini massive excavations were undertaken from 1938 to 1942.  It has been estimated that two thirds of the town have currently been uncovered.
