The town itself existed prior to the medieval castle.  Archeologists have found Paleolithic hand-axes, Neolithic flint picks, Bronze Age swords and an Iron Age brooch.  The castle was originally built by William the Conqueror.  It has been a principle residence of the British monarchy ever since.  Only a small portion is open to the public.  The floor area is 484,000 square feet.  Several additional building of interest are in Windsor including the Guildhall by Christopher Wren and the Market Cross House.
