The first major settlement in the area was founded by the Romans in 43 AD.  London has been a thriving community ever since.  For a concise history of the city see the reference.  I lived in London for several years and have made many trips to the city starting in 1972.  It is a marvelous place filled with history, tradition, good restaurants, good theater and congenial people.  Unfortunately, it is quite expensive as well.  I try to spend a few days there each year seeing friends and visiting old haunts.  London is a tremendous place to travel from.  British Air provides excellent access to almost any place in the world.
