My visit to Greenwich was directed at the Royal Observatory.  It was founded in 1675 by Charles II.  The prime meridian is located here and GMT is defined from this point.  The observatory played a primary role determining the measurement of longitude and in measuring time accurately at sea.  The main building is Flamsteed House by Sir Christopher Wrenn, named after the first Royal Astromoner, John Flamsteed.  The accurate timekeeping problem was solved by a Yorkshire carpenter who became a clockmaker named John Harrison.  The Royal Naval College was moved here in 1873.  Numerous maritime attractions can be found here.  Its an interesting boat ride from the center of London.
