A town of 13,000, Ely is noted for its weekly market, shopping district and its cathedral. The original cathedral was founded in Saxon times by St. Etheldreda, 7th century. The present Cathedral was begun in the 11th century by Abbot Simeon. The monastery church became a cathedral in 1109. The first major restoration took place in the 18th century by James Essex.
It should be noted that this was not a very good day for picture taking, dark and a bit misty, the cathedral deserves another look.
