The City Palace is a series of palaces standing on the east bank of Lake Pichola . Construction began in 1559 and continued into the 20th century.  The balconies of the palace provide panoramic views of the Lake Palace Hotel and Jag Mandir on one side and on the other the city of Udaipur.  The Maharaja lives in the Shambhu Niwas today.  The former guesthouse of the city palace, Shiv Niwas Palace and the Fateh Prakash Palace have been converted into heritage hotels.  The older sections are open to the public.  New hotels were under construction at the time of my visit.
