In 1067 Carcassonne became the property of Raimond Bernard Trencavel, through his marriage to Ermengard, sister of the last count of Carcassonne. The Trencavel built the Chateau Comtal and the Basilique des Saints Nazaire et Celes. In 1096 Pope Urban II blessed the foundation stones of the new cathedral. Construction continued until the 16th century. Only the nave remaines of the original 11th century Romanesque structure.
