During the Middle Ages Saint-Malowas a fortified island at the mouth of the Rance River.  The promontory fort of Aleth, south of the modern center commanded approaches to the Rance even before the Romans.  Modern St Malo traces its origins to a monastery founded by Saint Aaron and Saint Brendan early in the 6th century.  Its name is derived from a follower of Brendan, Saint Malo.  St Malo had a tradition of asserting its autonomy in dealings with the French authorities declaring itself to be an independent republic and from 1490 to 1493.  St Malo became notorious as the home of the corsairs, French privateers and pirates.  The corsairs of St Malo forced English ships passing up the Channel to pay tribute.  From St Malo are: Jacques Cartier, who sailed the Saint Lawrence River and is credited for exploring of Canada and the first colonists to settle the Falklands which gave rise to the Spanish name Islas Malvinas.  Most of the city was destroyed during WWII but it has been rebuilt.  It is a great place to use as a base while exploring the northern coast of France.  I stayed at the Hotel Oceania an easy walk to the walled city (La Ville Intra-Muros).
