In the 16th century, Henry II and Catherine de Medici commissioned architects Philibert Delorme and Jean Bullant to build a palace within the Fontainebleau forest 40 miles south of Paris.  They were assisted by Italian artists Rosso Fiorentino and Primaticcio who worked on the interior decoration.  Of interest is the Gallery of François 1st, with scenes like The Rape of Europa and the monarch holding a pomegranate, the richly adorned Louis 15th Staircase and the Ballroom with its monumental fireplace and frescoes.  Our visit was late in the day and we did not have time to tour the inside of the chateau.
