Ponte Sant'Angelo, once called the Aelian Bridge or Pons Aelius, was completed in 134 AD by Roman Emperor Hadrian. It spans the Tiber, from the city center to his mausoleum, now called the Castel Sant'Angelo. The angels were executed by Bernini's students as a result of a commission from 1699.
