The Ibn Tulun Mosque was built between 876 and 879 by Ahmed Ibn Tulun.  It is the oldest original mosque in Cairo.  It became a military hospital in the 19th century, was used as a salt warehouse and a beggar's prison before it became an historic monument in 1882.  The square minaret with a spiral external stair case is the only one of it's type in Egypt.
