El-zhar Mosque was built in 972 as the main mosque for the new city of Cairo.  The name can be translated as "The Most Blooming".  It's style was similar to that of the Ibn Tulun Mosque.  It opened for prayers on June 22, 972.  When I was there I was not allowed entrance.  The guide did not even want me to step out of the taxi.  For an overview, see Looking Out, Muhammad Ali Mosque, Citadel
